There are many things to consider if you want to become a bail bondsman. Many people don’t think about the facets of life they must be knowledgeable in to be a successful bail agent. For example, a bail agent must be well-versed in criminal and contract law, as well as know how to run a business and have a good grasp of finance. Additionally, you need to consider which state you want to be licensed in. Some states require licensing, while others do not. There are a few things that are generally required, however. These are as follows:

Basics for Bail Bondsman Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old, and have a GED or high school diploma to be eligible to be a bail bondsman. Additionally, you must complete a pre-licensing course, as well as pass the state licensing exam (if applicable). Finally, you must figure out your resources - you must meet the financial requirements to meet surety obligations, as well as get sponsored and backed by a surety company.

Training and Educational Requirements

In addition to having a high school diploma or GED, there are often additional educational requirements. It can be extremely helpful to have a college degree. Many successful bail agents hold anywhere from an associate’s up to a master’s degree. The most helpful college degrees include business administration, finance, or economics. Additionally, many states require a pre-licensing course that must be completed. They will help prepare you to take the state’s licensing exam in order to be licensed in that state as a bail agent.

Licensing Requirements to Be a Bail Agent

Each state differs, but many have licensing requirements (in some states, commercial bonding is prohibited completely). Check your state’s laws to learn more about licensing, and what the exam looks like. For example, many of the licensing exams are 50-60 multiple choice questions, and is available through multiple test providers. Be sure you know licensing requirements before you take the test. Once you’ve completed the test, you can apply for a state license!
